I realize that this post has nothing to do with marriage, but I felt compelled to share it anyway.
There are endless lessons to learn in life. They come at me from every direction and sometimes the most unexpected places.
Like when they come from my children.
I know I am the parent and it is my job to teach my children the lessons they will need in order to succeed in life, but I often find the tables turned. Many times they are teaching me.
The other day my 12 year old daughter came down and handed me a piece of paper. It was a donation form for the non-profit organization Locks Of Love. She said, “I want to cut my hair and donate it to Locks Of Love.”
I was so surprised. I knew she wanted to cut her hair, but I was unaware that she even knew about Locks of Love, much less had taken the time to research it and print out the donation form.
If you are not familiar with this amazing organization, Locks of Love makes custom, high quality hairpieces for financially disadvantaged girls, 21 and younger, that have medical long term or permanent hair loss. They understand all too well the connection that us girls make between our hair and our self esteem.
It really is a fantastic program.
Yesterday my daughter cut her hair and we sent it off to Locks Of Love.
This post is not made to boast about my daughter, though I am so very proud of her. But rather written as a reminder of the importance of giving to others.
My daughter has reminded me that we have been put on this planet to care for others. Whether it be thru big gestures like she has done, or small random acts of kindness.
I have been so wrapped up in myself and the stress that I have been feeling lately that it has been easy to forget that this world reaches far beyond me. That there are people in need and that I have the power to help in both big and small ways.
Sometimes it takes the wisdom of a 12 year old to remind me what I sometimes easily forget as a 40 year old.

That was incredibly sweet. My oldest daughter Sage donated once and she felt so good about it and we were extremely proud of her. My younger daughter Devon (pronounced the same as Devyn) never let her hair grow out long enough to do it.
We do the Random Acts of Christmas Kindness every year, along with other types of giving and donating.
I’ll show this video to my girls as soon as school’s over. Thank you for posting this and tell your Devyn that others are proud of her too.
It definitely makes you feel like a proud parent when you see your child take the initiative to do something kind for someone else. In all of the uncertainty that parenting can bring it is good to know that you must be doing something right to have children show thought and kindness towards others.
Sounds like you have a very caring and generous family.
I will be sure to let Devyn know. Thank you!!!
I will be sure to let Devyn know.
